Biography
I qualified as an Occupational Therapist from Essex University in 2017 having spent time within various settings including learning disabilities, mental health, older adults and brain injuries. I spent my first year after qualifying as Student Liaison Officer for the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, travelling the UK working as the link between RCOT and students. During this time I worked on establishing support for students and newly qualified occupational therapists from the professional body. My clinical experience has been dementia focused. I started my first role within the NHS as an Occupational Therapist in a community dementia service undertaking various activities from group work to home adaptations and mental health assessments. I specialised in teaching people with dementia and their families/carers how to utilise everyday ‘off the shelf’ technology to promote independence at home and reduce carer burden. I later became a Dementia Specialist for an acute trust where I worked on supporting people with dementia and their families during hospital admission and improving the care of people with dementia in hospital. The role included developing the trusts policies and procedures around dementia care, improving the physical environment and looking at utilising activities to reduce distress of people with dementia during admission. During this role, I led on improving dementia education across the trust and really became interested in clinical teaching. I joined the Lecturing team at Essex in January 2023 and will supporting the placement team as placement tutor alongside my teaching role.
