Profile

Biography

Nikos joined Essex Law School in September 2019 as Senior Lecturer. He was previously a Lecturer in Law at the University of Liverpool. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Hull, an LLM in EU Law from Université libre de Bruxelles and an LLB from the University of Athens. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research interests are in various areas of EU Administrative and Constitutional Law (including access to documents and transparency, the right to good administration, the provisions on democratic principles); avenues of extra-judicial accountability, with particular interest in ombud offices (including the European Ombudsman) and the European Court of Auditors; and the Law of the European Convention on Human Rights (especially admissibility matters and the reform of the Convention). Beyond the EU and the ECHR he has broader interests in questions of accountability, openness, ethical administration and citizens’ participation. In Essex, Nikos teaches on the Public Law module (‘Foundations of Public Law’); on the ECHR at PG level; and on research skills-focused modules (Legal Research Skills and Final year Research Project). He was a visiting fellow at Deusto Law School in Bilbao (fall 2015), a visiting scholar at the Centre for European Law and Governance at Cardiff University (fall 2016) and a visiting researcher at the Historical Archives of the European Union at the European University Institute (fall/ winter 2016-2017). Nikos’ first monograph, ‘The European Ombudsman and Good Administration in the European Union’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 'European Administrative Governance' series), a revised and updated version of his thesis, was published in late 2017 . He also worked on another project on the independence of the European Court of Auditors, further to a research grant awarded by the Historical Archives of the European Union and the European Court of Auditors. Nikos has published widely in leading journals in the fields on EU Law, Human Rights Law, Public Law and EU Governance (see ‘Publications’ for further details). He continues (as Honorary Supervisor) to supervise PhD researchers based in his former institution and welcomes enquiries and/ or PhD proposals in areas the fall within the above research interests.
