Dr Anh Nguyen

Biography

Dr Anh Nguyen is a clinician-researcher in the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex and a member of the Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing. His research advances health equity for vulnerable communities across Asia through behavioural science, nutrition, inclusive health systems, and participatory governance. He holds a clinical doctorate from the University of Stirling and advanced clinical research training from Harvard Medical School. Drawing on more than a decade of clinical practice in the UK as a registered nutritional therapy practitioner, Dr Nguyen integrates frontline healthcare experience with interdisciplinary research to develop evidence-informed solutions for maternal, child, and family health. He also leads the Asia Behavioural Insights and Parenting Lab, working closely with parents, practitioners, and communities to translate behavioural science into practical approaches that improve child and family well-being. At Essex, he contributes to a multi-country programme examining social participation in the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) at Centre for Global Health and Intersectional Equity Research. His work focuses on learning systems development and impact valuation, applying realist and mixed-methods approaches to understand how participatory processes inform priority-setting and support sustainable health system reform. His research sits at the intersection of behavioural science, nutrition and health systems, exploring how structural and contextual determinants shape maternal and child health. He develops theory-informed, culturally grounded interventions that integrate behavioural modelling, including COM-B and Behaviour Change Wheel frameworks, and implementation science in resource-constrained settings. Dr Nguyen serves on the editorial boards of PLOS ONE and JMIR Pediatrics and Parenting. He is a Fellow of the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), an Ambassador of The Genetics Society, and an active member of Cochrane and the UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab. His broader research vision is to bridge clinical practice, behavioural science, and health systems research to improve equitable access to evidence-informed care for children, families, and underserved populations.
