Biography

Originally from Liverpool, United Kingdom, I am a PhD Student at the University of Essex researching how bilingual English speakers of German and Japanese perceive gender differently to monolinguals, and the implications this has had globally. The goal of my research is to provide an insight into this phenomenon in order to help navigate gender discourse internationally using intersectional modes of thinking, and help deconstruct the linguistic aspects of gender dysphoria in trans and non-binary people. Prior to Essex, I have worked in several different fields. From teaching German and Japanese at institutions in both Liverpool and Manchester; to translating Japanese anime for a London based translation company outsourced by BilliBilli; to Human Resourcing Operations at a global pharmaceuticals company with a focus on the DACH region. My most notable translation work to date: Your Lie in April Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid season 2

Thesis

[Working Title] Pronoun Panic: How the English language influences a global understanding of gender identity with specific reference to German and Japanese non-binary identities.

Non-binary and trans identities have been under political and social attack with the emergence of far-right political groups online. There is an idea circulating that such identities are products of ‘woke’ modern thinking and youth sensitivity, despite trans and non-binary identities having a presence in foreign cultures such as Japan up until western involvement. Additionally the process of globalisation has played a role in the formation of understanding gender outside of the binary in Germany
