Biography

Jackie graduated with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy from the University of East Anglia in the late 1990s and spent her clinical career at Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust. Following junior rotations across multiple acute settings and specialities, she specialised in in-patient care and later in respiratory care specifically. This senior role in respiratory care enabled her to build specialist knowledge and skills across multiple settings and populaton groups, including; Intensive Care Units; Medical and Surgical wards, Community Pulmonary Rehabilitation; General, Thoracic and ENT Surgery; Paediatric wards and Neonatal Unit; and Cystic Fibrosis clinics (Adults and Paediatrics). Jackie moved into education in 2005, on the BSc Physiotherapy programme at Colchester Institute, before transferring to the University of Essex in 2009, where she has had the opportunity to deliver education to multiple healthcare programmes at multiple levels (undergraduate and postgraduate). Jackie has held the role of admissions tutor and marketing lead for Physiotherapy from 2009 until 2019, when she became Programme lead for the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy programme until 2022. She continues in her role as Subject Lead for Physiotherapy and co-ordinates delivery of the three pre-registration Physiotherapy programmes; BSc (traditional route), BSc (apprenticeship route), MSc (pre-registration). This role has led to work as an SRES Senior Student Adviser, an Investigating Officer for the SRES Professional Suitability Group, and the lead for any DBS cases within the school. She has also led a cross-faculty working group in the publication of the University of Essex 'Professional Clinical Attire Code of Conduct'. Jackie has a various research interests around the pedagogy of pre-registration healthcare students, with current projects looking into student preferences for formative feedback, and understanding of the professionalism requirements of healthcare students. Previous research and publications relate to the teaching of respiratory specialist skills during the COVID pandemic, and using students as buddies for those living with long term conditions. She also acts as a journal peer reviewer for the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care. Beyond her work for the University of Essex, Jackie is active professionally with various other HIgher Education Institutions, national and international healthcare professional and regulatory organisations. She is an external examiner for Universty College Birmingham, and the University of Gloucestershire, and is a Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Education Consultant (linking with York St John University, and the University of Greater Manchester). Jackie is currently working on a project with the CSP Student Support Advisory group, and sits on the Regulation Strategic Policy group for the Council of Deans for Health, with current work around the review of HCPC Standards for Education and Training. She works internationally with CORU, the Health Professions Regulator for Ireland, as a consultant responsible for the assessment of International registrant applications.
