I am a senior research officer in the Social Work and Social Justice Division of the School of Health and Social Care. I am working on a programme evaluation of 'A Better Start Southend' services to families with babies and very young children. I am also a registered social worker with Social Work England - registration number SW47922. My background is in adult social work and my area of expertise is social work policy and practice with people with caring responsibilities (carers). I have held senior social work roles with commissioning responsibilities for services and support provided to carers. I am a PGR student in the School in the final year of my Ph.D. exploring the effectiveness of the Care Act (2014) in promoting the wellbeing of carers through the use of personal budgets. My study uses a mixed-methods design to examine the intentions behind the policy intentions to support carers using personal budgets. Secondary analysis of pooled cross sectional survey data of adult carers across England examines if personal budgets have led to increases in reported levels of wellbeing among carers. Thematic analysis of semi-structured one-to-one interviews with 17 carers explores the lived effect and material impact of personal budgets on carers' lives. I am interested in discourse analysis as a theoretical approach to understanding the policymaking process and mixed methods research designs in relation to social work research and practice. I welcome approaches from students who are interested in the adult social care legal framework, theories of personalisation and personal budgets, and using mixed methods to address their research questions.
