Biography
Dr Faruk Bulut is a professor and currently serves as a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Essex. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Yildiz Technical University in 2015, with a dissertation titled "Construction and Performance Analysis of Locally Adaptive Base and Ensemble Learners." He also holds an M.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from Istanbul, completed in 2010, with a thesis titled "Detecting Students at Risk of Substance Abuse by Using Data Mining Classification Algorithms," and a B.Sc. degree in Computer and Electronics Education from the Faculty of Technical Education at Marmara University, completed in 1998. Following his undergraduate education, he dedicated more than fifteen years to training talented high school students for national and international informatics Olympiads. As an official tutor and instructor, he taught advanced topics such as C/C++ programming, Data Structures, Analysis of Algorithms, graph theory, computational geometry, discrete mathematics, and critical thinking. He also trained university students for the programming contests of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) organized by ACM. His efforts particularly focused on preparing contestans for the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), an annual competition organized by UNESCO and hosted each year in a different country. In the IOI, each participating country sends up to four students to individually solve challenging algorithmic problems over two days using languages such as C/C++, Java, or Python. Under his mentorship, students earned more than 50 medals, including gold, silver, and bronze, in these coding fasts. He has more than 15 years of academic experience at several universities in Istanbul, serving as a lecturer, thesis advisor, and mentor to both national and international students. He also had the opportunity to serve as a department chair, contributing to the development of academic CS/CE programs, syllabuses, modules, and student support initiatives. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised 6 dissertations and has taken roles as a PI, researcher, or advisor in 15 academic and industry-funded projects. His research interests include ML, DL, image processing, computer vision, optimization methods, decision support systems, discrete mathematics, and graph theory. He has made contributions to both practical and theoretical advancements in areas such as classification performance prediction, financial forecasting, plant disease detection using HDR imagery, and AI-assisted evaluation of medical procedures. His research particularly focuses on meta-learning methods and ensemble models within machine learning. Dr Bulut has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences, with over 25 journal articles indexed in SCI-E and Scopus, 4 book chapters, and more than 15 conference papers. He is an active reviewer for leading journals such as Elsevier’s Computers & Industrial Engineering and holds an editorial role in the journal J.UCS (TU Graz). He has reviewed nearly 200 research articles, proceedings, and participated in numerous MS and PhD thesis juries.
