Profile

Biography

James is a lecturer specialising in performance psychology. His research focuses on individual differences and mental health across performance settings, including sport, education and the workplace. He is particularly interested in understanding the factors that underpin performance, behaviour and wellbeing, and how these outcomes can be improved across different contexts. His work is grounded in psychological theory and draws on a range of quantitative and qualitative methods to generate actionable insights. He has particular expertise in structural equation modelling and multilevel modelling, alongside a growing interest in how emerging technologies can be used in research and practice. Alongside his academic role, James works as an external consultant to organisations in the private and third sectors. His consultancy includes supporting evidence-informed product development ahead of commercialisation and evaluating health and wellbeing interventions. He contributes across the full project lifecycle, from initial planning and delivery through to evaluation. James teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including modules in sport and performance psychology and research methods. He is also regularly invited to deliver guest lectures on allied health programmes, focusing on how future healthcare practitioners can protect their own mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and his teaching has been recognised with an Excellence in Education Award.
