Before coming to Essex, Michael taught in the School of Cultural Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University. He has also held visiting fellowships at Goldsmiths, University of London (2007); the ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC), a University of Manchester-Open University collaboration (2008); the London School of Economics and Political Science (2009); Wolfson College and the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH), University of Cambridge (2010).
