Working with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, part of the BMW Group, was something Arthur Muzira had set his sights on before joining the company through his placement year.

Arthur joined Essex to complete a BSc Computer Science.

He had long been interested in software development, having spent time as a child writing batch scripts on his mum’s computer.

Born in Lusaka, Zambia, and of Zimbabwean nationality, Arthur arrived in the UK as a 17-year-old international student and although Essex was not originally part of his plan, he quickly discovered opportunities that would shape both his academic and professional future.

Perhaps the biggest and most important came through a 13-month placement with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, where he worked within the Quality division on digitalisation and innovation projects.

During the placement, he led the development of ZIRA (Zone Inventory Reporting Application), a digital inventory and tool traceability system designed to improve visibility of production tools.

The project saw him take responsibility for every stage of development, from gathering requirements and designing database architecture to building the application and presenting the results to stakeholders.

What began as a placement project grew into something much bigger. ZIRA later became the foundation of his final-year dissertation and formed part of a patent application submitted within the BMW Group.

Reflecting on the experience, he said: “From early on, I was intentional about seeking opportunities where I could apply technology in real-world environments.

“Being able to do that at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, within the BMW Group, became one of the most rewarding experiences of my university journey.

“Seeing an idea progress from concept to implementation, and then continue beyond my placement year, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my university journey.”

Alongside his placement success, he was also recognised on the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence.

After graduation, he plans to move to Manchester to study for an MSc in Cyber Security with a focus on artificial intelligence at the University of Manchester.

Looking ahead, he hopes to combine technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, developing solutions that solve real-world problems and ultimately building his own technology startup.

He added: “Essex gave me opportunities far beyond the classroom. The experiences, people and support I found here have played a huge role in shaping my future.

“Essex gave me the freedom to explore different interests, meet people from diverse backgrounds and build experiences that have shaped my career journey.

“Looking back, many of the experiences that shaped my career happened outside of lectures, and Essex provided the platform to make those opportunities possible.”
