Audio Academy event on the Colchester Campus

Presenters from BBC Radio 1, the BBC Asian Network and Kiss FM were amongst the leading media professionals who joined students and the public at our Colchester Campus for an inspiring day exploring careers in the audio and radio industry.

Hosted in partnership with the Audio Academy, Foot in the Door brought together some of the industry’s most recognisable names and emerging talent to share insights, advice and practical guidance on breaking into radio and podcasting. The day featured a packed programme of panels, networking and live discussions, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how the industry operates.

For Essex students, the event offered a valuable opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals. BA Film and Journalism student Amos Gbolaru said speaking to experienced broadcasters reinforced his passion for audio. “It tells me it can be done,” he said, explaining that the experience has motivated him to finally launch his own podcast. “The day inspired me not to be afraid to make mistakes, to ask for help and to stay true to myself.”

The Audio Academy is the UK's leading charity for the audio industry. Alongside partners BBC Sounds and Broadcast Bionics, the event covered everything from getting your first role in radio, to developing original content and building a personal brand. A standout 90-minute speed-networking session allowed participants to connect one-on-one with professionals including BBC Radio 1 star Ore Olukoga and KISS Xtra’s Henrie Kwushue to gain practical advice and explore career pathways into the industry.

Journalism student George Plumb also found the experience transformative. “I learned a lot about the pathways into a radio career,” he said. “Hearing from professionals and producers was incredible and gave me a better understanding of how the world of radio operates. It was eye-opening and has made me consider a future career in radio”.

George and Amos played an active role in the day, interviewing speakers and attendees as they acted as guest producers for the Audio Academy Podcast produced during the event. The opportunity gave the students hands-on experience in audio production and storytelling.

Jon Wright, journalism lecturer, said: “What was impressive about this event was the range and diversity of industry professionals who came to Essex to share advice, inspiration and tips on early career audio producers and presenters.

“The session with DJ Kizzi from BBC Asian Network, Henrie Kwushue from KISS Xtra and BBC Radio 1 presenter Ore Olukoga was just joyful to watch as they shared their passion, their mistakes and lows, and gave great advice on managing their lives around radio, live DJing and social content.”

Hosting Foot in the Door at Essex highlights the University’s commitment to providing real-world opportunities for Journalism students. By connecting aspiring broadcasters with industry leaders, the event not only helped inspired future careers in media, but also aids students in building vital networks - showcasing the strength and ambition of journalism at Essex.
