A flagship outreach scheme that inspires teenagers to fulfil their potential at university will return after a £10,000 donation.
Verian Group UK awarded the University the generous gift to help remove barriers to higher education and inspires the next generation of leaders through the Summer Sleepover.
For many young people from underrepresented groups, the path to higher education can feel out of reach.
The Summer Sleepover changes that by giving students a unique opportunity to experience university life first-hand, build confidence, and gain the tools needed to succeed.
Taking place over three days and two nights, students will stay on campus in student accommodation and take part in evening socials, join sessions to boost readiness for university, and build leadership and independence.
Rachel Wier, Head of Outreach, said: “This is an incredible initiative that allows young people really fulfil their potential and learn how the University of Essex can help them get their dream job, pursue their passions, and join our vibrant community.
“We are so grateful for the Verian Group UK who will help us change lives and deliver this project.”
Verian Group UK provides large scale data collection and research delivery for the University’s Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) flagship Understanding Society study, underpinning the institute’s longitudinal evidence and social research programmes.
In 2025, the Outreach Partnership project delivered more than 320 targeted activities to nearly 17,000 high school students, from campus visits, mentoring, and summer residentials like the Summer Sleepover.
This year’s Summer Sleepover will fund enhanced resources for academic and enrichment sessions, upgraded amenities for a more comfortable student experience and a special leadership workshop delivered by a member of Verian’s senior team.
