The University of Essex has been ranked one of the best institutions in the UK for Political Science.

Essex’s Department of Government has been named fifth best in the UK and 33rd in the world by Research.com.

The rankings are based on a comprehensive bibliometric analysis using data primarily from global research catalogues such as OpenAlex and CrossRef.

Research.com evaluates the number of scientists at universities across the world, considering their publications and citations.

Essex was also ranked in the UK top 20 in two other subject areas; with Plant Science and Agronomy achieving 11th place, while Economics and Finance was ranked 13th best.

Reflecting on Essex’s high ranking in Political Science, the Head of the Department of Government, Professor Faten Ghosn, said: “Essex Government is consistently ranked among the very best because our department is built on a long-standing commitment to deep, rigorous, and impactful research.

“What makes us unique is the consistency of our research excellence: year after year, our scholars produce high-volume, high impact work that shapes debates across the discipline.

“Our world-class researchers are highly cited and widely influential, and our collective intellectual culture—curious, critical, and globally engaged—ensures that, whether measured by publications, citations, or overall scholarly influence.

“Essex continues to set the benchmark for excellence.”
