The University has ranked in the top 20 in the UK for its clubs and societies by the StudentCrowd University Awards 2022. The 19th place is calculated from online reviews by students themselves over a 24-month period.

The reviews praised the helpful and approachable staff and ease of navigating the campus.

Of the university's 43 sports clubs and 139 societies that boast over 7,000 members, the StudentCrowd Award makes special mention of the wide variety of societies on offer including groups that explore environmental sustainability, debating, blockchain & cryptocurrency and musical theatre appreciation.

Student Activities Manager for the Student Union Dominic King said: “We would like to recognise that this award is a testament to the ongoing and hard work of our 1,200+ club and society committee members, who have demonstrated innovative ways to keep their activities going through a very challenging period.

“It is amazing to see the recognition from our activity members, recognising the hard work and sacrifice made by so many.

“Clubs and societies are a key part of the student experience at university, and we are proud of the work that all our activities do in supporting the student and wider community.”

National Society and Volunteering Awards

The National Societies & Volunteering Awards recognise the contributions of student volunteers and student-led societies from UK higher and further education institutions. Essex’s Coding Club and Wellbeing Ambassadors were recognised and shortlisted by a panel of sector experts and were named as notable runners-up in their category.
