The Dean of Essex Business School, Professor Geoff Wood, joined a panel of leading academics and professional body members to explore gender inequality within academia, at a TRIGGER event this March.

Professor Wood was amongst colleagues from the likes of Ohio State University, UCL and the Dundalk Institute of Technology for the debate, which aimed to identify current problems with gender inclusivity within higher education and suggest potential solutions. Entitled Gender Inequality in Academic Community Bodies, the networking event took place at Birkbeck, University of London on 23 March 2017 and is part of a project to champion the role of female academics in scientific subjects.

Panellists were asked to share their own experiences and observations of gender inequality at work, exploring areas such keynote speaker and conference invitations, joining editorial boards and taking part in policy research groups. Participants explored how the academic community can learn from these instances, as well taking questions from the crowd.

TRIGGER is part of a five-country European consortium exploring the underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) subjects to bring about organisational change.
