Essex Law School students interested in practising law in Canada are invited to an in person session with Michael Rajan, who leads the Internationally Trained Lawyer Pathway (ITLP) at the University of Alberta.

This programme supports internationally educated law graduates in meeting the
National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) requirements needed to qualify as a lawyer in Canada.
The University of Alberta currently has Essex graduates enrolled on the ITLP, and Michael is visiting to speak directly with our students about:

  • The NCA accreditation process

  • Alberta as a route to Canadian legal qualification

  • Programme structure, exemptions, and academic requirements

  • How Essex modules (e.g., Canadian Constitutional Law) may support future applications

  • Broader pathways for internationally trained lawyers entering the Canadian profession

  •

This is a valuable opportunity to explore international legal careers and gain clarity on what Canadian qualification involves.

    Why Attend?

  • Understand the steps required to qualify in Canada

  • Ask questions about exemptions, module relevance, and academic preparation

  • Explore opportunities for Essex students already engaging with the ITLP

  • Learn how your current studies could support future accreditation

    Who Should Attend?

  • Students considering practising law abroad

  • Those interested in Canadian legal education

  • Anyone exploring international mobility in the legal profession

  • Final year students researching postgraduate pathways
