Join us for a hybrid (in-person or online) workshop on Nature-based Solutions for coastal defence.
The consequences of climate change put coastal communities at risk of coastal erosion and flooding due to more frequent and intense storms on top of sea-level rise. While hard-engineered coastal defences are costly to build and maintain, living coastal defences such as mangrove and saltmarsh wetlands, or coral and oyster reefs are self-sustaining once established and can grow with increasing sea levels.
Our ongoing networking project A Roadmap for Building with Nature for Climate Change Adaptation investigated the utility of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to protect coastlines from erosion. Our case studies in Thailand, Egypt and the United Kingdom have demonstrated similarities in the pressures exerted by coastal erosion and the willingness by local stakeholders to consider NbS for future adaptation of coastal communities to the effects of climate change.
