About International Tolerance Day
The International Tolerance Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1996 and grounded on the 1995 UNESCO Declaration on Principles of Tolerance is an occasion to celebrate the diverse ways of being human, promote mutual acceptance amongst diverse communities, examine the value of the human rights framework in supporting societal cohesion, and contribute to enhancing inclusion. The Essex Human Rights Centre, in continuing its tradition of celebrating the International Tolerance Day annually, has chosen to focus on the topic of ‘culture wars’ to empower our students to take a human-rights approach to this widening and deepening socio-political phenomenon.
