UpLift is an international film festival, organised by students at the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies (LiFTS) at University of Essex, and is part of their assessment for the LT409 Film Festivals module.

The festival screens film work and hosts additional activities that focus on particular themes or filmmaking modes. This year, in its second edition, the festival explores the animation mode of filmmaking.

This year UpLift aims to:

  • Create a space to nurture Animation within the film industry and give it the attention it deserves (showing them that it’s worth carrying on trying as well as breaking any stigma attached to it).
  • Educate the general public on Animation, showing them the development process of Animation, while encouraging their own creativity.
  • Create a space for new animators to network and find new collaborators who are at a similar early level to them.
  • During the festival, apart from screenings, there will be workshops and talks with students and film industry professionals, networking events, as well as a closing party.

The festival will show 26 short animation films of a variety of styles and themes, coming from 19 countries from across the world. Students have carefully curated the programme out of 542 submissions!
