The School of Life Sciences Seminar Series welcome Dr Glen Smith from Middlesex University

Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is about planning our access to - and use of - marine resources. It is now the dominant management approach worldwide. However, MSP is not innately equipped to deal with questions of power and community engagement. The social benefits of marine resource use and protection could be much more wide ranging: possibly achievable through a more radical form of MSP.

Speaker

Glen is half English and half German and has led a somewhat nomadic life. An MSc in Environment and Development at the University of Edinburgh awakened his interest in marine social sciences and he went on to complete a PhD in marine resource management at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø. In his PhD he focused on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in Scotland, with a particular interest in issues of power and process transparency. A post doc position followed in University College Cork, Ireland on coastal climate change adaptation and he currently works at the Flood Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University. His research here is centred on questions of justice and equality in the management of flood risk. Glen is keen on a range of sports and also enjoys fixing people's bicycles, sometimes with their permission.
