Sociology Welcome Back Postgraduates

Following the winter vacation, the Department are delighted to welcome you back to Essex. Consider this your 're-induction' and a chance to refamiliarise yourself with essential services and support here at Essex.

All postgraduate students are invited to attend our  'welcome back' events to meet others, and learn more about the free support and services available to you. Here's what we'll cover:

Week commencing 16 January

• Writing for Postgraduate study. Monday 16 January, 12-1pm via Zoom

If you're struggling with the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate writing, or coming back to university after a break, this is a recommended workshop for all postgraduates to understand more about what is expected of you at this study level. • Back to Basics. Tuesday 17 January, 10.15 - 11am via Zoom

Recap your understanding of Moodle, My Essex, and more. Join this Zoom meeting to find out more on how to make the most of essential resources for your course. We'll cover Moodle, MyEssex, FASER, and where to go to ask for help. Click to join the Zoom meeting at the start time. If you're unable to make this date, a second session has been scheduled for the following week.

• Sociology Study Centre Drop-In. Thursday 19 January, 2-4pm 

Come along in-person to our Sociology Study Centre (5A.307) if you needed to ask our Study Support Manager any questions relating to your studies and wellbeing. No need to make any appointment, simply drop-by anytime between 2-4pm. 

• Introduction to your SU. Thursday 19 January, 4.30pm - 5pm in 5A.330

This will be a short 10-15 minute talk to learn more about our Students' Union and a chance to meet our Student Reps in the Department.

• Overcoming procrastination and prioritising your time. Tuesday 24 January, 3 - 3.45pm via Zoom

Learn effective study strategies in this session hosted by Inclusion and Learning. This is a particularly useful session if you are facing complex challenges. Book your space via CareerHub. 

• Postgraduate Lunch Social. Thursday 26 January 12.30 - 1.30pm in the Common Room (5A.325)

Meet other postgraduate students in the Department. This is a great chance to meet familiar and new faces, and have an informal catch-up after the holidays. Taking place in the Common room, with free light refreshments provided. 

• Your wellbeing and mental health. Thursday 26 January, 2.15pm - 3pm via Zoom 

What if it's not the January blues? Taking care of your mental health and wellbeing is essential for study success. Find out more about wellbeing support available at Essex and who to talk to if you wanted to explore options to take better care of your mental health. Zoom details TBC.
