Artist in Conversation: Hetain Patel with Gaylene Gould

Artist Hetain Patel is in conversation with writer and arts advocate Gaylene Gould, talking about his film ‘Don’t Look at the Finger’, currently on show at Art Exchange.

Join us in finding out more about the ideas and motivations behind the making of this extraordinary film where a man and a woman dressed in West African robes communicate through a combination of Kung Fu and signed language to express a ritualist coming together. In the grand architectural setting of a church we witness cultural references from the margins freely join together and entangle, as assumptions are challenged and boundaries blurred.

This event includes a screening of ‘Don’t Look at the Finger’, followed by an in-conversation between Hetain and Gaylene, and Q&A with our audience.

Hetain Patel

Hetain Patel is a British born artist of Indian descent who grew up in Bolton and is now based in London. Patel is interested in connecting marginalised identities with the mainstream in an effort to destabilise notions of authenticity and promote personal freedom. With an autobiographical starting point he uses humour and the languages of popular culture and explores fantasy through a domestic lens. Hetain Patel has exhibited extensively including at Tate Britain (2009), Serpentine Gallery (2014), Sadler’s Wells, London (2015), New Art Exchange, Nottingham (2012), Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai (2015 and 2018), and Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2012) the Jerwood Space, London (2017) and the British Art Show (2021). Gaylene Gould

Gaylene is a Creative Director, broadcaster and writer who designs interactive art projects and spaces that connect us with ourselves, each other and the world. She explores the healing and growth potential of sharing space, stories, ideas and knowledge through her artistic, writing and consultancy practice. She believes the transcendent moments that art and culture creates can change how we are in the world. Her projects have been commissioned by and performed at the Tate, V&A and BAM, New York to name a few. Gaylene is also an arts broadcaster for the BBC, a published fiction writer and a Cultural Ambassador for London, appointed by Mayor Sadiq Khan. She is on the advisory board for the Decolonising Arts Institute and her new creative company is  The Space to Come.
