Finding out about Frantz Fanon

Frantz Fanon (1925 - 1961) a psychiatrist and political philosopher who is known for his urgent and dynamic critique of the effects of racism on the psyche is a landmark study of the black experience in a white world. Drawing on his own life and his work as a psychoanalyst he investigates how colonialism's subjects internalise its prejudices and find ways to mask their trauma. Colin Samson and Jak Peake will explore Fanon's writing and its relevance today.

Professor Colin Samson is a lecturer from the Department of Sociology, University of Essex. His research interests include indigenism and human rights. He has recently published 'The Colonialism of Human Rights', which highlights the paradox that the nations that credit themselves with formulating what were supposed to be human rights were colonial powers and sponsors of enslavement of Africans.

Dr Jak Peake is a lecturer from the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies, University of Essex. He has published extensively including 'Between the Bocas: A Literary Geography of Western Trinidad', and his most recent research interests include the 'New Negro' and the Harlem Renaissance.
