Dr Koldo Casla from the School of Law and the Human Rights Centre will discuss COVID-19 and socio-economic rights in crisis mode as part of the Essex Explores lecture series.
COVID-19 and socio-economic rights in crisis mode
Dr Casla's lecture is based on two main observations. Firstly, evidence from the UK and other countries shows that historically embedded regional, social class and ethnic inequalities are strong indicators of vulnerability to COVID-19.
And secondly, the consequences of this pandemic will stay with us for much longer than the lockdown. It is therefore more urgent than ever to define what it means to protect and fulfil socio-economic rights when responding to a serious public health emergency. Taking these rights seriously requires revisiting our policies in relation to a number of areas, including social security, public services, private property and taxation.
