Challenging ideas, difficult questions, complex answers.

We’re bringing them all to you in our Essex Explores online lecture series.

During these unprecedented times we think the Essex Spirit is more important than ever. We hope this new online lecture series is going to give people around the world the chance to be inspired by research at University of Essex. Our research is committed to engaging with the key issues we face in our lives – including of course the impact of COVID-19. These lectures are also a chance for our University community to forget lockdown and come together to share ideas and ask difficult questions.

Wither the Lonely? Addressing loneliness and connectedness in a time of enforced isolation

In January 2019, the UK Government publicly committed millions of GBP to its Campaign to End Loneliness by pledging to fund and proliferate the social prescribing model of person-centred health and social care. Just over a year later, as many local authorities were launching their social prescribing schemes, COVID-19-related social distancing threatens to derail the nation’s anti-loneliness initiatives. This presentation contains first-cut analysis of survey data asking individuals about social prescribing, COVID-19 and loneliness during the social lock-down.
