CANCELLED: Teacher CPD week - An introduction to data science and R

This event forms part of the University of Essex Teachers and Advisers CPD Week.

The 2017 A level amongst other things saw the introduction of the large data set to the teaching of statistics. In this session you will have an opportunity to meet with Data Scientists from the Department of Mathematics Sciences for a hands on session to introduce you to the R software package to show you how you could use it to begin exploring a data set. (Please note this sessions will be general rather than specific to any specifications particular data set).

Programme for the day:

9:00am Registration 

9:20am Welcome to the University of Essex 

9:40am Session 1 

Understand what Data Science is and an introduction to R. Learn how to read data into R, how to cleanse data and how to calculate basic descriptive statistics. 

11:00am Tea/Coffee break and networking 

11:15am Session 2 

This hands on session will continue from the first session and offer delegates an opportunity to further familiarise themselves with R with the help and support of our expert data scientists. 

12:30pm Lunch and campus tours
