This talk has been cancelled.
These Departmental Seminars are for everyone interested in Maths. We encourage anyone interested in the subject in general, or in the particular subject of the seminar, to come along. It's a great opportunity to meet people in the Maths Department and join in with our community.
Refreshments are shared in the Department (STEM 5.1) after every seminar.
Given an algebraic variety - that is the vanishing locus of a set of polynomial equations - it is a classical question to understand the possible degenerations of it.
In this talk, we will illustrate known answers dating the work of Hilbert from 1893. Then, Professor Gallardo will describe joint work with J. Martinez-Garcia where they approach such a question for pairs of subvarieties in projective space.
