Is detachment a virtue? Professor Fitzpatrick’s talk explores this question with reference to her own experience as a historian and memoirist, particularly in writing about her late husband, Michael Danos, in a recent book that straddles both genres, Mischka’s War.
Sheila Fitzpatrick is a historian of modern Russia/the Soviet Union who is Professor at the University of Sydney and Distinguished Service Professor Emerita of the University of Chicago. Her recent books include Tear off the Masks! Identity and Imposture in Twentieth-Century Russia (2005), A Spy in the Archives: A Memoir of Cold-War Russia (2014); On Stalin’s Team: the Years of Living Dangerously in Soviet Politics (2015; co-winner of 2016 Prime Minister’s Award for Non-Fiction), and Mischka’s War: A European Odyssey of the 1940s (2017).
She is currently completing a monograph on Russian immigration to Australia after the Second World War and working on a biography of Lenin’s wife, Nadezhda Krupskaya.
The event is free, however please register your attendance via Eventbrite.
