What is Gender and Who Are Women? Queer Questions for Women, Peace and Security

Join the Centre for Intimate and Sexual Citizenship and Centre for Criminology and Dr Jamie Hagen for an insightful open seminar, addressing the gap in literature regarding how sexual orientation and gender identity are understood, when it comes to implementation of the women, peace and security (WPS) resolutions.

Informed by queer theory and feminist security studies Dr Jamie J. Hagen considers how the (WPS) Women, Peace and Security community defines "woman" and "gender" as well as the slippage that occurs between these definitions.  Dr Hagen reviews how these definitions have evolved and been operationalized since the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in 2000.  

Questions motivated by this research include: How do lesbians, bisexual and transgender (LBT) women fit into the WPS architecture? what do the three "P's" of the WPS agenda (protection, prevention and participation) look like if applied to the lives and needs of LBT women? A discourse analysis offers an insight into if and how the WPS architecture applies to LBT women.
