Big data and policing: pre-crime, surveillance and technological oppression
Speaker: Griff Ferris, Legal and Policy Officer, Big Brother Watch.
Chair: Daragh Murray, University of Essex.
In partnership with the Human Rights Big Data and Technology Project.
The police are attempting to use new and often fundamentally authoritarian surveillance technologies - built using big data - to watch us, profile us, predict our actions, and decide whether we should go to prison and for how long. The use of such dystopian technology to monitor and control people has resulted in unjust and discriminatory police tactics reinforcing existing biases and widespread interference with people's fundamental rights.
All welcome.
