The return of the Sustainability at Essex newsletter
Welcome to this month’s Sustainability spotlight
As we step into the new term we’re excited to be bringing the sustainability newsletter back to share our updates. In our newsletters you will find up to date news, events, stories and training opportunities.

The Sustainability champion of the month is: Dale Young!
Dale is a Facilities Officer in UECS. He has been capturing footage of our campus wildlife on our wildlife camera and creating videos for us to use on our social media. Take a look at them here.
Dale told us why he embeds sustainability into his work: ‘The university has a high focus on sustainable practices, as well as amazing biodiverse park land that provides natural habitat for many animals, it is inspiring to be a part of and to work with other departments across campus, to appreciate our site.’
We would like to regularly showcase members of staff who are doing fabulous things for sustainability. If you would like to nominate a sustainability champion in your department, please do get in touch.
EAUC - The sustainability alliance for education
The University is a member of the EAUC, so what does this mean for you? Staff have access to lots of sustainability resources including this really interesting online course (for free). It is a sustainability champions learning pack and will help you broaden your knowledge on climate change, net zero, the biodiversity and nature crisis and more. To access all the resources we need to set an account up for you – just let us know!
Sustainable Essex Awards
Have you got a project or event coming up that you could submit to the awards? Head over to our Moodle to read the resources of how to apply this year. We have also created a document which showcases what teams did last year for each award which may give you some ideas.
If you have an idea you would like to put into action, which can be submitted to the awards, but aren’t sure about something, then please email us and we can have a chat with you to see which award it would fit under.
Latest sustainability news
We have recently installed solar PV panels on the roofs on our South Courts accommodation this has boosted our renewable electricity generation from 4% to 8%. Read more about the project here.
