Capability procedure

People who are performing well in their role are much more likely to be happy at work, experience job satisfaction, and have a good work-life balance. The aim of the Capability Procedure (.pdf) is to help people improve and maintain their performance and achieve these outcomes.

Each stage of this procedure is focused on supporting people to perform at their best. The Capability Procedure Guidance (.pdf) for managers sets out ways to get the most out of the process and support people so they perform at their best.

View an example Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) (.dotx).

Employees with prolonged ill-health, where there is no realistic prospect of returning to work, would be managed under this procedure.

What you need to do

Where a difficulty is identified, it should first be tackled informally. Where informal action has failed to bring about the necessary improvement, it may be appropriate to take formal action through the Capability Procedure.
