Support for Heads of Department, School and Section

Head of Department, School and Section play an essential role in the delivery of our University Strategy 2019 – 2025. To ensure that people in these key leadership roles are fully supported, we put in place a personalised leadership development plan which aims to recognise the experience of colleagues as well as the specific focus of the role. This includes a range of training, events and conversations based on individual needs. Support includes:

Training

Events

  • Attendance to a senior role holder induction event where you will be introduced to the strategic role, University context and orientation to support in the role. This event is led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
  • Attendance at action learning sets with other senior role holders to identify challenges and issues in the role and find ways to overcome them.
  • Regular People Landscape meetings will be arranged with colleagues in the People & Culture section. These provide opportunities to discuss and plan for strategic people issues in the area including workforce and succession planning.

Conversations

  • Shadowing can be arranged to support Heads before starting in the role.
  • Meetings will be arranged with key stakeholders from areas across the institution, including Finance, Planning and Data Insight, People & Culture, REO and Academic Section.
  • Mentors will be encouraged throughout your time in the role to ensure that appropriate support is available during different challenges and opportunities in the role.
  • Additional support available includes: a reading list, Leadership coaching, Reverse mentoring, Psychometric assessments with feedback including: Thomas Killman Indicator, 360 leadership or management, DISC, Belbin.
