How to run an event sustainably

When organising an event it is important to consider sustainability when planning. We all need to work together on reducing our carbon emissions and helping the university reach their net zero goal by 2035. Here is a list of things to consider for your event:

  • Transportation: use public transport where possible, check event timings so your attendees can use local public transport services
  • Go plastic free: ask for feasibility of using glass/china cups if you are ordering catering, promote to all stakeholders to bring their own reuse cups and bottles
  • Location: is the location best suited for the event, are there any better alternatives? Think about whether you can run the event hybrid so your audience could attend without travelling.
  • Paper free event: use QR codes and promote via social media
  • Food: use vegan/vegetarian catering, use locally sourced produce, collate accurate numbers for catering, do not over order, this will reduce food waste
  • Request jugs of water instead of using plastic bottles
  • Use Projectors rather than printing
  • Reuse stock from previous events
  • Segregate waste clearly and effectively to prevent contamination. Promote nearest bins for stakeholders to use.
  • Record and communicate best practice/areas for improvement for future events
  • Speak to the Sustainability team if you require any further advice.

Thank you for considering sustainability for your event. We would love to hear from you and how your event went.
