Profile

Biography

I am Professor of Accounting and Director of the Centre for Accountability and Global Development at Essex Business School, University of Essex. I founded the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies (JAEE) and continue to serve as its editor. My work has been recognised through the British Accounting and Finance Association Distinguished Academic Award in 2022, awarded for contributions to accounting and finance research and education in the UK. In 2024, I was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Over the last three decades, my research has examined accounting as a social, political and institutional practice. I do not treat accounting as a neutral technical device. Rather, my work shows how accounting participates in the organisation of power, the reproduction of inequality, the disciplining of labour, the legitimation of reform, and the marginalisation of alternative forms of knowledge. This research has been developed through sustained empirical engagement across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with particular attention to neoliberal reform, labour control, corporate governance, sustainability, public sector accountability and settler colonialism. My work crosses several disciplinary fields. In accounting, I have published in Accounting, Organizations and Society, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal and Critical Perspectives on Accounting. In sociology and work studies, my publications include Sociology and Work, Employment and Society. In public administration, I have published in Public Administration and International Review of Administrative Sciences. In development studies, my work has appeared in Development and Change. I have also contributed to interdisciplinary health and social science debates through publications in Social Science & Medicine. Beyond academic journals, I have written for wider public audiences through The Conversation and Everyday Society, including pieces on Palestine, Bangladesh and labour rights. Through JAEE and my wider involvement in scholarly associations, I have sought to create intellectual space for researchers working on the Majority World. A central concern in my academic work has been to challenge the dominance of Western-centric frameworks and to support scholarship that takes histories, institutions, and political economies seriously and the lived experiences of societies that are often treated as peripheral in mainstream accounting research. My research draws on ethnography, archival analysis, interviews and cultural political economy. It has examined settings as diverse as Bangladeshi tea plantations, Japanese hospitals, Palestinian fiscal governance, Indonesian local government, Middle Eastern family firms and African corporate governance. These projects are sustained through long-term collaborations with early-career researchers, doctoral students and academic partners across more than a dozen countries. My current and future work continues this agenda. It focuses on violence and labour control in South Asia, epistemic injustice and decolonisation in accounting scholarship, and the rethinking of governance through non-Western philosophies and social relations. I am also developing new funded projects with partners in Bangladesh and the UK, to advance research that is theoretically ambitious, empirically grounded and socially consequential.
