Biography

Judith Bueno de Mesquita is a Lecturer and Co-Deputy Director of the Human Rights Centre in the School of Law and Human Rights Centre. Her research focuses on health and human rights, development and rights, and economic, social and cultural rights. She has particular interests in sexual and reproductive health, as well as the work on health and rights of UN institutions. Her current research focuses on Covid-19 and the right to health, including issues of: the intersection of science and health; social determinants of health; global approaches and obligations; and accountability. Other current research includes: the relationship of health and other social rights, and climate change, health and rights. She is currently the coordinator of the Economic and Social Rights Academic Network UK and Ireland (ESRAN UKI). From 2015-2019, Judith was Deputy Director of the Human Rights Centre Clinic. Her current and recent work with the Clinic, carried out with inspirational and dedicated students, has supported partnerships with UN institutions and NGOs on research projects focused on: criminal law and human rights in areas including abortion, sexuality, drug use and possession and sex work; the practice and potential of UN agencies and human rights mechanisms to act as amicus curiae; privatisation of healthcare; universal health coverage and marginalised groups; and health in the UPR procedure. Judith has previously worked with a range of UN and other institutions on health and rights issues. She worked as a consultant with national human rights institutions and UNFPA national offices in Kosovo and Azerbaijan to undertake national assessments of sexual and reproductive health and rights. She has worked extensively as a consultant for the World Health Organisation's Department of Reproductive Health and Research, including on the development of the Global Abortion Policies Database and on indicators. From 2001-2008, she was Senior Research Officer in the Human Rights Centre supporting the work of Paul Hunt in his capacity as UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, and Rapporteur of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. She has also worked as a consultant and other similar capacities for OHCHR, UNICEF, DFID, Medact and International Planned Parenthood Foundation. Judith has an LLM (distinction) in International Human Rights Law from Essex University, an MA in History from the University of Cambridge, and is currently slowly studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
