Diego Garcia Rabines

Biography

I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Essex, funded by an ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership. My interest lies in intimacy as a vector of governance. My doctoral project explores the lives of sexually and gender-nonconforming indigenous Amazonians in Peruvian cities, often framed as neither indigenous enough because of their sexualities nor (sexually) modern enough because of their indigeneity. Through ethnographic methods, I aim to understand how dissident sexualities figure in the contested debates and political projects surrounding urban indigeneities and citizenship. In my earlier work, I focused on urban gay mens intimate relationships. Over a decade of personal and academic engagement with this social world, I tracked transformations in how these men understood and practised intimacy in terms of romantic ideals, gender, and the futures their intimacies could produce. Taken together, this work positioned Peruvian gay cultures of intimacy at the centre of theorisations of temporality, sexual globalisation, and class-based inequalities.
