The Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) hosted its first Data Science Week to offer a vibrant and collaborative series of events showcasing the power and potential of data science and artificial intelligence across disciplines and sectors.
The week brought together researchers, early career scholars, and external partners to spark ideas, form new collaborations, and explore how data science can shape a more informed, ethical, and innovative future.
“Data Science Week has truly exceeded our expectations. It showcased the incredible breadth of expertise across the University and highlighted how much more we can achieve by working together across disciplines,” said Professor Haris Mouratidis, Director of IADS. “The enthusiasm and engagement from both internal researchers and external partners made it clear that Essex is a growing hub for impactful data science.”
Dr Marta F Arroyabe, Deputy Director of IADS, added: “This week was about building synergies—between technical innovation, social impact, and policy relevance. We’ve seen meaningful conversations spark between researchers from different fields, and between academia and industry. That’s exactly the kind of collaboration we aim to foster at IADS.”
Building Interdisciplinary Momentum
The week began with a cross-university forum showcasing the rich expertise in data science, AI, and analytics from across the institution and looking to strengthen interdisciplinary research. Participants from across the university discussed their current projects and explored how legal, social, ethical, and technical perspectives could be more deeply integrated into data science research. Breakout sessions encouraged participants to reflect on existing research gaps, share challenges, and imagine cross-disciplinary projects that address real-world problems.
Exploring Real-World Applications with Industry
An industry-academia workshop followed, which tackled some of the most pressing challenges in AI and data through collaboration and innovation. Industry and public sector representatives joined IADS and Essex researchers to share how data science is being applied across sectors — from healthcare and telecommunications to sustainability and digital security. The event offered a platform to identify mutual interests and initiate collaboration. A roundtable and reception created space for informal networking and idea exchange, with participants highlighting the value of academic–industry dialogue.
Empowering the Next Generation of Researchers
Early career researchers from across the University of Essex and the Eastern Arc network had their own dedicated space during the week, with an interactive event focused on industry engagement and collaborative research development. Led by IADS fellows and supported by the Innovation Partnerships team, the session featured a themed roundtables on the social impacts of AI and the development of sustainable, trustworthy technology.
AI in Action: A Cross-Sector Perspective
The week concluded with a flagship engagement event that brought together professionals from academia, industry, and the public sector. A series of engaging talks highlighted how AI is already transforming public services, enhancing operational efficiency, and raising critical questions around ethics and implementation.
