The Regius Lecture, Demographic change and the politics of a world with low fertility and ageing populations

There is a long-standing tradition of concerns about future overpopulation and its impact on the world. However, it is increasingly becoming clear that not only is population growth slowing, but fertility rates are decreasing rapidly and falling far below replacement level in many parts of the world.

This year’s Regius Lecture will review evidence on demographic change and forecasting, and examine the potential social, economic and political challenges arising from a future with lower fertility and ageing populations.

Join us for a thought-provoking evening that brings together leading experts to explore the far-reaching consequences of demographic change.

Regius Professor Kristian Gleditsch will set the stage, before a dynamic roundtable of scholars from the University of Essex—spanning economics, political science, migration studies, and sociology—delve further.
