The Essex Finance Centre (EFiC) at Essex Business School is organising the fifth edition of the EFiC Conference in Banking and Corporate Finance. The objective is to bring together leading academics, practitioners and policy-makers and give them the opportunity to present state-of-the-art research in the broad areas of banking and corporate finance.

 The Conference is committed to providing a safe and productive setting for all participants and therefore will be held online for 2021.

 How to submit

  • Interested authors should submit their paper by email to efic@essex.ac.uk by Monday 19 April, 2021.
  • Early submissions are highly encouraged. Authors will be notified of the decision by Monday 31 May, 2021.
  • Please title your file using the following format for the file name: EFiC_SubmittingAuthor_PaperTitle.pdf and in the email subject header please add Submission: EFiC 2021. 
  • Selected best papers will be considered for publication in a Special Issue of the Journal of Financial Services Research (JFSR). Please see below for the rules.

EFiC Conference Programme 2021

The  EFiC 2021 Conference Programme is now available

Special Issue with the Journal of Financial Services Research (JSFR)

The rules for the solicitation process by the JFSR are as follows:

  1. Author(s) must expressly indicate interest in consideration by the JFSR in their submission email. The paper must not be under review at another journal or the JFSR, nor can it be considered if previously rejected by the JFSR.
  2. The Guest Editors for the Special Issue, namely Claudia Girardone, Sotirios Kokas and Steven Ongena, will invite high quality papers among the accepted papers after the conference presentations for possible publication in the JFSR. Submission fees will be waived for these invited conference papers. Papers of the author(s) accepting this invitation will undergo a normal review process that maintains the JFSR’s high-quality publication standards.
  3. If an invited paper is subsequently rejected, its author(s) will have the option to submit a future version of their paper to the JFSR without prejudice.
  4. While under consideration by the Conference and the JFRS, a paper may not be submitted to another journal (or the JFSR) until the author(s) has been notified of the outcome.

Keynote speaker

Steven Ongena is a Professor of Banking in the Department of Banking and Finance at the University of Zurich, a senior chair at the Swiss Finance Institute, a research professor at KU Leuven, and a research fellow in financial economics of CEPR. He is also a research professor at the Deutsche Bundesbank.

Before moving to Zurich, he taught at CentER-Tilburg University and BI Norwegian Business School and studied at the Universities of Oregon (PhD), Alberta (MA) and KU Leuven (MBA, Hir).
