Showcasing our work in literature, screen and stage

The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies runs a programme of events throughout the year for everybody to attend.

You can expand your experience beyond what you study on your course by attending our weekly research seminars and film screenings as well as writers' talks as part of our Writers at Essex series and plays at our University’s Lakeside Theatre.

We also hold major conferences and symposia and our postgraduate students have the opportunity to be involved in organising and presenting at our annual postgraduate conference.

Robots, Empathy, and Asian 'Comfort Women' History in Plum Rains (2018)

This talk will examine Andromeda Romano-Lax's novel, Plum Rains (2018). With a mixture of dystopian critique and surprisingly hopeful attitudes, the novel considers how a new generation of robots might offer us a much-needed lesson in how to be both human and humane. This hybrid event can be attended in person or online.
