Who are we?

We promote the inclusivity and equality of all the students at the University, especially those that live with hidden disabilities.

Our goal is to raise awareness of these disabilities and provide a support network that everyone can access.

We work to challenge misconceptions and make living at University easier.

What is a hidden disability?

Hidden disabilities don't have physical signs but can significantly impact day-to-day life.

Examples of hidden disabilities include:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (formally known as ME)
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Arthritis (rheumatoid, osteo, psoriatic etc)
  • Lupus
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders (IBS, Colitis, Celiac Disease, etc)
  • Chronic Migraine
  • Allergies (Chronic rhinitis, allergic asthma, mast cell activation syndrome etc)-
  • Sleep disorders (insomnia, sleep behaviour disorder, narcolepsy etc)
  • Learning Disorder (dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia etc)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Asperger’s, OCD, Tourette’s, atypical etc)
  • Mental illness (depression, anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar, BPD etc)
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Cystic Fibrosis

Please note, this list is not exhaustive - there are many different disabilities and they are all welcome at Essex.

Can I join the society?

As a society, we would never judge if you are ‘eligible’ to join our support network. If you identify as having a hidden disability, this is the place for you.
