 Philip Berners



Philip joined the Edge Hotel School at the University of Essex in January 2017. His previous appointment was as lecturer in event and hospitality modules at the University of West London. He gained his Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and was accepted as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Since joining the Edge Hotel School as lecturer and course co-ordinator of the BA Event Management programme, Philip has published two books (Routledge 2017, 2019) and has embarked on his Ph.D research into international event management in evolving markets, a comparative study of Poland and the UK. As an event manager himself, Philip was head of events at Thorpe Park, the London Hippodrome and Camden Palace. He was a senior manager at the BRIT Awards for three years and has a client portfolio which includes the Queen, Prince Charles, Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez and Shania Twain. Philip spent 10 years in Poland where he was an event consultant and director of his own school of event management.

Current research

The approach to international event management in evolving event industries: a comparative analysis of Poland and the United Kingdom

PhD research project to investigate how an evolving event industry (Poland) approaches international event management in areas such as client handling and risk management, and comparing this with a fully evolved event industry (U.K.)
