Profile

Biography

In 2020, Osama Mahmoud has joined the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Essex as a Lecturer in Data Science and Statistics. His expertise lies within Biostatistics, Medical Statistics, and Data Science domains with extensive practice of high dimensional data analyses, particularly from functional genomic experiments. Developing and effectively applying advanced machine learning techniques, e.g. for clustering and classification problems, are a key aspects of his research profile. Applications of statistical modelling, e.g. multilevel models, with high throughput data sets for causal inferences in genetic epidemiological studies are one of his main research focus. He has developed several novel statistical techniques, e.g. Proportion Overlapping Score (POS) and Slope-Hunter, and authored several R packages that are available available at the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) and his Github. He is delivering a number of R courses in Machine Learning and Medical Statistics for a wide range of audience at the University of Essex, University of Bristol and other institutions through both modes of online delivery and face-to-face learning.
