Profile

Biography

Kaprice Ricot-Brutus is a PhD researcher in Psychology (with Law and Forensic Science). Her doctoral project examines the juries interpretation of uncertainty and the weighting of forensic and expert evidence within criminal proceedings, integrating cognitive psychology, forensic science and legal decision-making. Her research explores how cognitive biases, probabilistic reasoning, perceptions of expert credibility and the communication of scientific uncertainty (with a minor focus on handwriting evidence) influence jurors evaluation of evidence and judgements of evidential reliability. Kaprices interdisciplinary expertise spans forensic evidence interpretation, cognitive and behavioural analysis, decision-making under uncertainty and the psychological processes within legal judgements. Her work also draws on theories of judgement and decision-making, cognitive bias and evidence evaluation to examine how jurors understand, interpret and assign weight to complex scientific testimony, with broader implications for the fairness, transparency and reliability of criminal justice decision-making. She holds a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science (2021 to 2024); a Distinction MSc in Crime and Forensic Science from UCL (2024 to 2025), and an MA Law from the University of Law (2025-2026). Her research spans forensic science, cognitive processes, handwriting evidence, handwriting analysis, feature analysis, decision-making under uncertainty and the evaluation of expert evidence. Kaprices broader research portfolio integrates forensic science, cognitive analysis (Psychology) and legal frameworks. She is an Associate Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences and a member in the Social-Legal Studies Association. She is additionally expanding her legal expertise by preparing to complete the SQE 1 and 2 with the SRA, with particular interests in international human rights law and legal reform in England and Wales.
