Biography
Ridvan Bagriaçik is a PhD candidate in Maritime Law at the University of Essex, supported by a full scholarship from the Turkish Ministry of National Education. His research examines the private law implications of liability limitation in the context of emerging maritime technologies, with a particular focus on autonomous ships under English law. Ridvan holds three undergraduate degrees, including an LLB from Istanbul University. He is a qualified attorney and certified mediator in Turkey, specialising in maritime, commercial, and insurance disputes. He has worked with the Istanbul Bar Association and gained hands-on experience at the 17th Commercial Court of Istanbul, which deals exclusively with maritime cases. In addition to his research at Essex, he is concurrently pursuing a second PhD in Civil Law at Istanbul University. Upon completing his doctoral studies, Ridvan is expected to return as a full-time academic to Istanbul University Faculty of Law. His long-term objective is to contribute to the development of maritime legal thought in Turkey and beyond, with a focus on the legal challenges posed by technological innovation in the shipping industry.
