Wivenhoe Park celebrates decade of Green Flag success

The University of Essex is celebrating after Wivenhoe Park, home to its Colchester Campus, secured a prestigious Green Flag Award for the tenth consecutive year in recognition of its outstanding green spaces, biodiversity and environmental stewardship.

The prestigious Green Flag Award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, recognising sites that are welcoming, safe, sustainably managed and environmentally rich.

Set within 200 acres of historic parkland, Wivenhoe Park is a treasured part of the University and wider Colchester community. The landscape, immortalised by renowned artist John Constable, provides a unique setting for learning, research, recreation and wellbeing, welcoming students, staff, visitors and local residents throughout the year. Wivenhoe Park is home to three lakes, thousands of trees, woodland, meadows and extensive green spaces that support a rich variety of wildlife.

Achieving the award for a tenth successive year reflects the University's long-term commitment to protecting and enhancing its natural environment. Over the past decade, the Grounds Team has worked to improve biodiversity across the estate through sustainable land management, habitat creation, wildflower meadows, tree conservation and the careful stewardship of the park's lakes, woodland and open spaces.

We are committed to continually improving our green spaces, enhancing biodiversity and ensuring our campus remains an inspiring place for students, staff, visitors and the wider community."

The award also recognises the important role Wivenhoe Park plays in supporting health and wellbeing. As well as providing a home for teaching and research, the park offers space for exercise, outdoor learning and relaxation, while acting as a vital habitat for wildlife and a green sanctuary for the local community.

The award highlights the expertise, dedication and hard work of colleagues who care for the campus every day and recognises the important contribution Wivenhoe Park makes to student and staff wellbeing, research, teaching, community engagement and the conservation of an historic landscape.

As Wivenhoe Park raises the Green Flag for a tenth consecutive year, the University is not only celebrating a decade of achievement but reaffirming its commitment to maintaining nationally recognised standards while continuing to create a thriving environment for people and nature.
