Essex ranks highly for social sciences in QS World University Rankings by Subject

The University of Essex is ranked 50th for 'politics and international studies' and 55th for sociology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

The latest rankings also see Essex ranked highly in several other subjects within the Faculty of Social Sciences with linguistics in the top 150 and ‘accounting and finance’ and ‘economics and econometrics’ in the top 200 in the rankings.

In the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, philosophy is also ranked in the top 200.

Professor John Preston, Faculty Dean for Research for the Social Sciences, said: “Essex continues to rank highly once again on the global stage for the social sciences with particularly high scores for citations and academic reputation. I’m pleased to see the international impact our research continues to be recognised.”

  • Sociology – 55th (9th in UK)
  • Linguistics – 101st-151st (11th in UK)
  • Accounting and finance – 151st-200th (25th in UK)
  • Economics and econometrics – 151st-200th (18th in UK)
  • Philosophy – 151st-200th (23rd in UK)

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 cover a total of 51 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas.

They are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. Research citations, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics, are used to rank universities.
