Module description

Learners will consolidate understanding of physiological regulation and adaptation to exercise and develop critical understanding of research and evidence.

Module aims

To help students provide in-depth understanding of exercise physiology; develop critical thinking and improve scientific reporting by writing an SPF.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of physiological regulation.
2. Explain the physiological factors that limit exercise performance.
3 Describe acute changes in the cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and endocrine systems in response to exercise.
4. Describe chronic changes in the cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and endocrine systems in response to exercise training.
5. Critically evaluate research in order to develop and present coherent evidence-based arguments in written form.

1. Overview of physiological factors that limit exercise performance. 2. Explain how the cardiovascular system responds to an acute bout of exercise. 3. Discuss the strengths and limitations heart rate measures. 4. Explain how the respiratory system responds to an acute bout of exercise. 5. Understand the applications and limitations of using Near Infrared (NIRS). 6. iscuss the acute and chronic response to exercise of skeletal muscle. 7. Understand the applications of electromyography and complexity a muscle strength testing and of using Near Infrared (NIRS) in exercise.
