Students will consider their own development as future leaders, recognising how the contexts in which they will practice, are constantly evolving. Students will learn about the concepts and theories of leadership, and will begin to develop skills to enable them to lead their own develop and that of others, in preparation for qualified practice.

1. Critically reflect on your development as a student Physiotherapy leader, and discuss how this development will continue in your career
2. Identify opportunities to promote physiotherapy leadership and propose appropriate solutions
3. Construct and present a robust argument around a topic influencing healthcare practice, drawing from a range of sources
4. Critically evaluate the role of leadership within health and social care
Indicative Content:
Identifying ongoing CPD and the benefits to individual and service development
Context of practice and evolving health care systems e.g. FCP, modern matron, etc.
Critically exploring and evaluating common policies and practices -proactive vs reactive
Models of leadership
Leadership skills (e.g. communication, emotional intelligence, change management, being aware of own beliefs and the potential influence on others)
Service Improvement
NHS Leadership strategy
Challenging common misconceptions around health and risk averse populations (e.g.
the worried well, back pain and rucksacks, back pain and manual handling, vaccinations)
A mixture of lectures, seminars and independent learning will be used to deliver this module

Formative assessment:
Portfolio will be formatively assessed by personal tutor throughout the year, at mutually convenient times
Formative feedback will be given following the group debate presentations in class
Written essay- a 500 word plan or draft section may be submitted
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
